Generative AI (GenAI) Policy

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) presents both significant opportunities and complex challenges in academic research and publishing. Jurnal Pendidikan dan Pengajaran Guru Sekolah Dasar (JPPGuseda) recognizes the potential of GenAI technologies (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) to enhance research efficiency and language clarity. However, to maintain the integrity of the scholarly record, the use of these tools must be strictly governed by principles of transparency, accountability, and ethical compliance.

This policy outlines JPPGuseda’s expectations for authors, reviewers, and editors regarding the use of GenAI in the preparation, evaluation, and publication of manuscripts.

1. Authorship and Accountability

  • GenAI Cannot Be an Author: In accordance with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines, AI tools do not meet the criteria for authorship. GenAI cannot take responsibility for the submitted work, hold copyright, or manage conflicts of interest. Therefore, GenAI tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors.

  • Complete Human Accountability: Authors remain fully, legally, and ethically responsible for the entirety of their manuscript, including any content (text, data, or figures) generated or refined with the assistance of GenAI. Authors must guarantee the accuracy, integrity, and originality of their submissions.

2. Transparency and Disclosure

JPPGuseda requires absolute transparency regarding the use of GenAI.

  • If authors utilize GenAI tools in any capacity during manuscript preparation (including drafting text, refining grammar, translating, or generating structural ideas), they must explicitly declare this usage.

  • How to Disclose: Authors must include a clear statement in a dedicated section titled "Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies" (placed before the References list) or within the Acknowledgments.

  • Example Statement: "During the preparation of this work, the author(s) used [Name of Tool/Service] to [Reason/Purpose]. After using this tool, the author(s) thoroughly reviewed, edited, and validated the content, and take full responsibility for the final publication."

  • Failure to disclose the use of GenAI technologies constitutes a breach of publication ethics and may result in manuscript rejection.

3. Ethical Compliance and Data Integrity

The use of GenAI must not compromise the scientific rigor of the manuscript. Authors must ensure:

  • No Data Fabrication: GenAI must never be used to fabricate, alter, or manipulate research data, methodologies, or results.

  • Citation Authenticity: Authors must not rely on GenAI for generating references. GenAI tools are prone to "hallucinations" (creating fictitious citations). All references must be manually verified for existence and accuracy.

  • Plagiarism Prevention: Authors must ensure that GenAI-generated text does not inadvertently plagiarize existing published works.

4. Peer Review Process & Confidentiality

  • Reviewer Restrictions: Peer reviewers are strictly prohibited from uploading submitted manuscripts (or any parts thereof) into GenAI tools. Doing so violates the author's proprietary rights and the fundamental principle of peer review confidentiality. Reviewers must apply their own professional human judgment and expertise to evaluate the scholarly merit of the submission.

  • The editorial team does not utilize GenAI to conduct peer reviews or make qualitative judgments on manuscript submissions.

5. Editorial and Publishing Practices

All final editorial decisions (Accept, Reject, or Revise) are made strictly by human editors. While JPPGuseda may utilize AI-assisted tools for backend editorial tasks—such as plagiarism detection (e.g., Turnitin), formatting, or language checking—the substantive evaluation of scientific quality remains an exclusively human endeavor.

6. Continuous Review

Because GenAI technologies are rapidly evolving, JPPGuseda will continuously monitor developments in the field and periodically update this policy to remain aligned with the latest best practices established by global academic publishing bodies (e.g., COPE, DOAJ, and OASPA).
